A 33-year-old Kuruman man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his 6-year-old niece.

During 2015, the man, dubbed “uncle the rapist”, accosted and raped the 6-year-old family member.

The identity of the accused could not be revealed to protect the identity of the victim.

The incident happened in Nanana Section, Batlharos, near Kuruman. According to the police, the girl arrived home from school, when her uncle went into the room while she was taking off her school uniform. He threw her on the bed, forced himself on the girl and raped her.

“A family member walked into the room and caught the uncle red-handed raping the girl. The family member immediately alerted the biological mother of the victim,” police spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, said.

Apart from the family member’s eye-witness testimony evidence in court, “uncle the rapist” was linked to the crime through forensic investigation.

The man was this week sentenced to life imprisonment in the Kuruman Regional Court.

“The Northern Cape SAPS Provincial Management is assured that the jail life term handed down on “uncle the rapist”, will serve as a deterrent not only to him but to those who might be contemplating similar heinous, barbaric criminal acts against vulnerable individuals in the society.”

The Northern Cape Provincial SAPS Management also paid tribute to the Investigating officer,  Warrant Officer Caren Nel, from the John Taolo Gaetsewe, Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit (FCS), as well as the National Prosecuting Authority including the Department of Justice for exceptional investigation and successful prosecution which ultimately resulted to a lengthy jail term handed to “uncle the rapist”.
