“It is alleged that during 2020 the two senior officials at the department awarded PPE contracts to two companies without following prescribed procurement procedures. The total cost involved is estimated at R43 million.”

THE ACTING head of the Northern Cape Department of Health, Dr Dion Theys, and the department’s chief financial officer (CFO), Mosimanagape Gaborone, were granted bail of R20,000 each after they made their first appearance in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday following their arrests on charges of fraud and the contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

The two accused were arrested by the Hawks in the Northern Cape on Monday.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Nomthandao Mnisi said the pair are accused of awarding personal protective equipment (PPE) contracts, worth an estimated R43 million, without following the prescribed procedure.

“It is alleged that during 2020 the two senior officials at the department awarded PPE contracts to two companies without following prescribed procurement procedures. The total cost involved is estimated at R43 million. A thorough probe by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team led to the arrest,” said Mnisi.

She added that the Hawks team was applauded for the arrests.

“The provincial head of the Hawks, Major-General Kholekile Galawe, lauded the team for the great success. Galawe assured that the Hawks will continue to perform their investigative functions without fear or favour regardless of the position or status of the person involved,” said Mnisi.
