TWO MINORS were arrested in connection with the murder of a bed and breakfast owner in Ritchie, Gunther Schwalb, 68, on April 28.

Schwalb went outside the house at around 4am on the day of the incident after he suspected that intruders had trespassed onto the property and were in the process of stealing his wife’s Volkswagen Golf.

After the suspects apparently threw stones at him, hitting him on the head, he retreated back into the house, where he collapsed and died on the scene.

His wife called the police and the local neighbourhood watch and the suspects fled the scene on foot.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that the police arrested two boys, aged 14 and 17 years old, on April 28 at around 4.30pm in Motswedimosa, Ritchie.

“The minors were subjected to a preliminary assessment with a probation officer before court on May 3,” said Kock.

The regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the matter was postponed until May 10 in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court.

“All of the accused are in custody. They are facing charges of murder, malicious damage to property and attempted theft,” said Senokoatsane.
