THE GARIES police arrested two men for being in illegal possession of succulents worth approximately R200,000.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the arrests were made at a farm near Garies on Tuesday during routine inspections.

“Sergeant Johan de Waal noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle stopping on the N7 and making a U-turn. Upon investigating the place where the vehicle stopped, De Waal found two suspects in possession of alleged poached Conophytums,” said Kock.

“The suspects, who are aged 22 and 28 years old, will be appearing in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court soon. The investigation continues.”

Kock added that the police would increase efforts in clamping down on the poaching of succulents in the Namakwa District.
