TWO PEOPLE were arrested by the Kimberley police in two separate incidents of alleged drunken driving on the weekend.

According to police spokesperson Captain Tessa Jansen, a woman was arrested after her car collided with another vehicle in Aristotle Avenue.

“On Saturday, February 27, 2021, police members were called to an accident in Aristotle Avenue. Upon arrival at the scene, the members found a black Fiat Punto and a white Toyota Corolla with their front parts damaged. It is alleged that the Fiat Punto neglected to stop at a stop street in Park Road and when the woman turned into Aristotle she then collided with the Corolla,” said Jansen.

“It was established that the woman had been at a pub and was smelling of alcohol. She was taken for blood tests, after which she was arrested on charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving without a driver’s licence and reckless and negligent driving.”

Jansen added that a man was arrested on the same evening following an alleged hit-and-run incident in Phakamile Mabija Street.

“On arrival at the scene, the police found a woman lying near a red Volkswagen Polo with a broken windscreen. A man was holding another person, who turned out to be the suspect. The man explained that the driver of the Polo knocked the woman over and then ran away. Community members chased the suspect and brought him back to the scene,” said Jansen.

“It was established that the man was smelling of alcohol and he was taken for a blood test. He was thereafter arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving.

“Paramedics transported the woman to Lenmed Hospital for medical treatment.”
