TWO NORTHERN Cape men were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment each for raping a mentally impaired girl.

Kagisho Bonolo Smous, 23, and Kabo Moncho, 24, from Deurham village, were sentenced in the Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court this week following an incident that took place on February 14, 2014.

On the day of the incident, at about 8.40pm, the 17-year-old girl was on her way to the shops when she was accosted by the pair.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock said they grabbed her and took her to a house where they raped her.

“The mother of the girl was able to locate the house where her daughter was sexually assaulted. However, the suspects fled through a window,” said Kock.

He added that the accused were 16 and 17 years old at the time of their arrest.

“Both accused were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with two years suspended for five years,” said Kock.

The provincial head of the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit, Brigadier Nicky Mills, commended Detective Sergeant Matshidisho Boikanyo from the Kuruman FCS unit for his outstanding investigative work in the matter.

“The SAPS will continue to focus on gender-based violence as one of our priorities and ensure that perpetrators of these heinous crimes are brought to justice,” Mills said.

In a separate case, a 45-year-old man was convicted of killing a 61-year-old man with a sickle and sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment by the Upington Regional Court on November 19.

Upington police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the deceased, Jan Rooi, was stabbed in the head with a sickle and was rushed to hospital on January 17, 2020.

“He was admitted and later transferred to the intensive care unit, where he died a few days later. Detective Sergeant Silingile opened a murder docket and after a successful investigation a suspect, Hendrick Beukes, 45, was arrested,” said Masegela.

“Beukes was found guilty of murder with direct intent and was sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment.”
