A SUNSET cruise on the Vaal River turned into a tragedy when two men were killed in a motorboat accident near Douglas on the weekend.

The incident occurred late on Sunday evening on the Vaal River near Douglas, when a motorboat carrying three men apparently collided with an overhanging branch before careening into the banks of the river.

Two of the occupants, whose identities are known but who cannot be named prior to confirmation that their next of kin have been informed, were declared dead on the scene, while the third occupant was rushed to a local hospital after police, paramedics and members of the public had some difficulty reaching the scene of the crash.

Douglas resident Hennie Visser was among the community members who assisted with the process of recovering the bodies of the deceased and salvaging the wreckage, with dense reeds along the water’s edge, compounded by a dark evening, making it difficult to reach the scene of the accident.

“This is probably the first time in about 40 years that we have had such a tragic accident where people lose their lives like this,” Visser said yesterday afternoon.

“They (accidents) may not be a regular occurrence but they will always be a possibility.”

The surviving occupant of the boat, 49-year-old Prieska resident Johan Croukamp, was initially transported to a hospital in Douglas by Emer-G-Med paramedics, after suffering head injuries, before being later transferred to Lenmed hospital in Kimberley.

This was confirmed by the private hospital yesterday morning, with staff at the facility adding that while the patient had been admitted with lacerations, he had subsequently been discharged.

He declined requests for an interview yesterday as he was very emotional following the incident

Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Captain Olebogeng Tawana, yesterday confirmed that a criminal investigation was currently under way following the incident.

“The Douglas police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following the death of two male persons,” Tawana said in response to media enquiries. “The two died after their boat capsized in the Vaal River at about 6.45pm on Sunday.
