LABOUR federation members went on a trolley dash at the Diamond Pavilion Mall on Women’s Day to highlight the “poor working conditions” of workers.

Cosatu provincial secretary Orapeleng Moraladi explained to police officials who asked them if they had permission to be there, that they were only doing their shopping

Moraladi stated that workers who were employed at shopping malls did not have any job security.

“We are standing in solidarity with casual workers who have been employed for over 10 years without being hired permanently. They are not being paid the minimum wage, they have no benefits and are exposed to health and safety risks.”

He said that companies had an obligation to provide safe and reliable transport for workers who had to work early and late shifts and that the pay gap between men and women had to be narrowed.

Moraladi added that after filling their trolleys to the brim with groceries, they blocked traffic at the tills to frustrate shoppers by making them wait longer in the queue.

After cashing up their items at the tills, the union members did not pay for the goods and left the store without their groceries.

The labour federation members also visited other stores at the mall while displaying their placards.
