JUDGMENT on the bail hearing of one of the five accused who are to stand trial for the murder of the Brand family on their smallholding in Magogong near Hartswater is expected to be delivered next week.

The three Brand family members were abducted from the smallholding on July 26 and vehicles were stolen from the property.

The bodies of Danie, 83, Breggie, 73, and their daughter Elzabie, 54, were found in the veld near Takaneng village, near Taung, on July 28, following a massive search that was launched.

The family’s Nissan Micra was found abandoned in Majaneng village in Taung on July 27 while a grey Mazda CX5 that was also reported as stolen was stopped by the police in the Pudimoe district.

The five accused – Khomotso Mpumlwana, 43, Tshepo Visagie, 36, Tshepo Seolesang, 20, Tshepaone Melato, 19, and Realeboga Manyedi, 18 – are facing charges of murder, kidnapping and robbery.

Mpumlwana made a formal bail application in the Hartswater Regional Court on Thursday.

Visagie, Seloesang, Melato and Manyedi have abandoned their right to apply for bail.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) provincial spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the matter was postponed until September 3 when judgment on the matter was expected to be heard.

All the accused will remain in custody until their next court appearance.
