A THREE-year-old Philipstown toddler has died following an “accident” at an early childhood development (ECD) centre.

Details surrounding the incident are unclear, however the Northern Cape Department of Social Development has confirmed the incident that happened on Thursday last week.

Department spokesperson Gamiem Abrahams said that the MEC and HOD of the department paid a visit to the toddler’s family on Friday.

“The department can confirm that a three-year old toddler sadly lost his life after an unfortunate accident at an ECD centre. The child was immediately rushed to the nearby clinic after the incident, which happened during playtime. Officials from the department were informed and immediately dispatched a team to provide trauma counselling to all affected. An inquest docket was opened and the police, with the support of the department, will investigate. Therefore, no further details can be released as the matter is sub judice,” said Abrahams.

“The MEC for Social Development, Martha Bartlett, and the HOD have cancelled their official engagements in Johannesburg to visit the family and the staff at the ECD centre. The department conveys its most sincere condolences to the family, friends and broader community.”
