Three 12-year-old Northern Cape pupils, Priyankka Saha, from Voorspoed Primary School, Simosihle Sebolaaneng, from Sishen Intermediate School and Mamello Maphalla, from Op Die Voorpos Primary School, will represent the Northern Cape at this weekend’s National Spelling Bee Competition in Pretoria.

The three pupils came first, second and third respectively at the provincial competition, which took place at Masiza Primary School in Kimberley.

The competition is held at school, cluster, district and provincial levels and is aimed at improving pupils’ performance in languages, especially English.

A total of 912 Grade 4 to 6 pupils participated in this year’s Provincial Spelling Bee Competition.

All provincial participants received certificates.

The three winners also received tablets sponsored by CAMP I AM, as well as trophies sponsored by the 2016 National Winner, Mayuri Govender.

The winner of the national competition will represent the country at the Africa Spelling Bee that will be held next year.
