THE SPRINGBOK SAPS Visible Policing unit arrested three suspects after copper cables were stolen from a cellphone tower.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the police members chased after five suspects on Tuesday, at about 8am, but they only managed to arrest three of them in the veld near Springbok Hospital.

“Approximately 86 metres of copper cable was stolen, where the police managed to retrieve about 70 metres on the scene. The SAPS members also confiscated two pangas, a hand saw and a screwdriver that were allegedly utilised in the commission of a crime,” said Kock.

He added that the suspects were expected to appear in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of tampering, damaging or destroying essential infrastructure.

“The investigation continues.”

The acting district commander for Namakwa, Colonel Schalk Andrews, commended the members from the Springbok SAPS Visible Policing unit for their “fast response” and also thanked the community for their assistance.
