THREE Sol Plaatje employees – an acting electrical foreman and two electrical students – sustained extensive burn wounds after an explosion at a mini sub-station in Aviva Road in Kimberley on Wednesday morning.

The explosion occurred while they were busy repairing a circuit breaker.

All three employees were rushed to hospital and one is apparently in ICU.

Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Thoko Riet said the employees were trying to replace the circuit breaker.

“They were busy with electrical repair work. The load shedding experienced in the area had an effect on the incident. The area will, unfortunately, be without power as we assess and work on the power station. The entire power station has burnt and we will have to conduct extensive work on it. We regret the inconvenience. We also want to wish our injured colleagues a speedy recovery,” said Riet.

This is a developing story.
