THREE Kimberley SAPS members, including a high-ranking officer, were arrested by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit this week on various charges including fraud, corruption, forgery and defeating the ends of justice.

The commander of Kimberley Vehicle Safeguarding, Captain Gibson Manong, was released on bail of R5,000 by the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court following his arrest on August 20.

The charges relate to a vehicle that was released from the police pound in December 2018.

Two police officers stationed at the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court, Sergeant Shawn Everyday and Sergeant Pule Thipe, were also arrested by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit on August 19 on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

It is alleged that the two police officers received gratifications from suspects in the holding cells in exchange for supplying them with contraband items including weapons and drugs.

They received bail of R1,000 each.

SAPS provincial spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers confirmed that a police captain was arrested on August 20 on charges of fraud, forgery and defeating the end of justice.

“It is alleged that he fraudulently released a vehicle. The investigation continues.”

She stated that the two 43-year-old police sergeants stationed at the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court were facing charges relating to allegations of corruption, theft and defeating the ends of justice.

“It is alleged that the pair received money for providing prisoners with parcels in the holding cells at the court. Investigations are continuing.”

The acting provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Major-General Luntu Ngubelanga welcomed the arrests and reiterated that fraud and corruption would not be tolerated within the organisation.

“Those who are involved in criminality will be dealt with concisely and harshly within the confines of the law and SAPS disciplinary regulations,” he added.
