TWO SUSPECTS were arrested for stealing the wheels of a vehicle and gas cylinders belonging to a soup kitchen in Prieska.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the suspects, who are aged 26 and 27, were expected to appear in the Prieska Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of theft from a motor vehicle and theft general.

“A manager at the Empilisweni Drop Inn Soup Kitchen alleged that when she left the centre on May 6 everything was in order. However, when she returned on May 9 she noticed that the organisation’s vehicle was stripped of its four wheels. Upon inspection she also discovered that three 19 kilogram gas cylinders were stolen,” said Tawana.

He added that the Prieska police immediately launched an investigation to trace the stolen goods.

“While they were busy with the investigation they received a tip-off about the suspects, who were seen in possession of the alleged stolen goods.

“The police found the suspects in possession of the reported stolen goods worth R3,000. The duo were put behind bars.”

The Pixley ka Seme district commissioner, Brigadier Nomana Adonis, commended members of the community for sharing information that led to the arrest of the suspects.

“Accepting and buying stolen goods is a criminal offence,” Adonis added.
