AUTHORITIES made another breakthrough in the case involving the theft of firearms from a Northern Cape police station.

Law enforcement officers apprehended two suspects alleged to be involved in the theft of firearms and ammunition from the Petrusville police station in November last year.

This follows the arrest and appearance in court of two Northern Cape police sergeants in connection with the case last week

According to Hawks regional spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomthandazo Mnisi, two civilians, aged 44 and 41, were arrested on June 14 by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, Crime Intelligence and the Kimberley Flying Squad in the Free State.

Their arrests come after a complaint was lodged with the Office of the Provincial Commissioner last year regarding the theft of firearms and ammunition from the Petrusville police station on November 6, 2023.

A case docket was opened with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) team for further investigation.

The firearms were later recovered in Senekal and Marquard in the Free State. A suspect, 42-year-old Orefile Moshugi, was arrested and then released on bail.

The matter was taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision and it was concluded that five suspects must stand trial for theft and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The two men arrested on June 14 will be joining their co-accused, Sergeant Olebogeng Samuel Molotsi, 44, and Sergeant Phokoile Thomas Plaaitjie, 43, when they make an appearance in the Petrusville Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 18.

Molotsi and Plaaitjie appeared in court on June 13 and the case was postponed to June 18 for a formal bail application. The two officers remain in custody.
