SURGEONS and anaesthetists at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital wore black armbands on Friday, September 18 in a show of support for Johannesburg anaesthetist Dr Abdulhay Munshi, 57, who was murdered this week.

Munshi was shot multiple times in the back of the head by unknown assailants on Wednesday when a vehicle reportedly rammed into his car while he was driving.

The police have not yet established the motive for the shooting as no items were stolen during the incident.

Munshi was a co-accused in a culpable homicide case with paediatric surgeon Professor Peter Beale.

Legal action was taken against them following the death of Zayyaan Sayed, 10, who underwent a laparoscopic procedure at Park Lane Hospital last October 2019 for a routine reflux operation.

The two doctors were granted R10,000 bail each and were expected to make their next appearance on November 16.

The Sayed family have denied any involvement in the killing.
