Teenager forced to watch mom, brothers die in shanty fire

A THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD girl had to stand and watch while her family died in a shack fire after managing to save just her 10-year-old brother.

Her 31-year-old mother and two brothers aged 8 and 3 died in the fire which broke out in their shack on Friday night at around 9 pm.

The Galeshewe police have opened an inquest docked after the three died in the fire in Snakepark, Galeshewe.

The little boy the teenager managed to rescue, sustained burn wounds and was rushed to the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital.

It is believed that the daughter was on her way home from buying water when she saw their shanty was on on fire.

Police spokesperson Captain Bashoabile Kale said she then rushed to the shack and managed to save her 10-year-old brother by pulling him through the window of the burning shack.

“It is reported that the 31-year-old mother was sleeping when her 13-year-old daughter went to the shop to buy water.

“The course of the fire is unknown at this stage and an inquest docket has been opened,” said Kale.
