AN 18-YEAR-old Northern Cape teenager was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the De Aar Regional Court for raping a 17-year-old girl in September 2023.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said on Wednesday that the girl was attending a party with friends at the time of the incident.

“The girl was sleeping at her aunt’s house in Colesberg later that evening. She woke up and found the accused, who had also attended the party, busy raping her. She screamed for help and alerted her aunt. The accused was arrested and was later convicted on a charge of rape,” said Kock.

He added that the accused was sentenced on March 6 and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the investigating officer, Detective Constable Headman Nogqala from the De Aar SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for his “meticulous investigation that led to the conviction”.
