THE BAIL application of the 18-year-old Galeshewe teenager who is accused of stabbing another teen to death was on Monday postponed to June 14 for further investigations.

Jemaine Long, 18, from Santa, Galeshewe, is accused of fatally stabbing 16-year-old Toma Raad on April 29.

Long appeared before the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court for an unrelated case of assault on Friday, May 5. The court announced that the two cases would be merged.

Long will now remain behind bars as it was pointed out that he has breached his bail conditions.

Long entered the packed courtroom on Monday with a bandaged head after reportedly being assaulted by an angry mob.

His home in Santa was also torched last week by angry community members.

The community members, who have been attending the court proceedings, expressed relief that Long will not be freed for now.

The uncle of the deceased victim, Abraham Ngceza, said he hopes that law enforcement officials will be able to gather enough evidence ahead of the postponement date.

“This is more than enough time for the investigating officer to return prepared in June. This case does not need to be dragged on for too long,” said Ngceza.

Community activist and member of #Justice 4 all GBVF movement Herbert Miller pledged support to the victim’s family throughout the court proceedings.

“This is only the beginning. We will be with the family throughout the trial to ensure that innocent members of society are protected from such terror,” said Miller.

“The suspect must not be sent to a rehabilitation centre, he must be jailed for at least 30 years before he gets an option to appeal,” he added.
