A 19-year-old Barkly West teen was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to stabbing a 20-year-old man to death.
A BARKLY West teenager, Emmanule Ali, 19, was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to stabbing a 20-year-old man, Itumeleng Godfrey Marekwa, to death.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said the incident occurred in 2021 when the pair had an altercation.
“On Saturday, December 11, 2021, Marekwa was working outside Shoprite in Barkly West as a shopping trolley assistant when he was stabbed in the neck by Ali after a brief altercation. Marekwa died on the scene and Ali was arrested by the police,” said Kock.
“On September 19, 2023, the accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for murder by the Kimberley Regional Court.”
Kock added that the investigating officer was applauded for his “meticulous investigation” of the case.
“The acting district commissioner for Frances Baard, Brigadier Charlotte Makgari, commended the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Kgositsile Taolo, attached to the Barkly West SAPS Detectives, for his meticulous investigation that led to this outstanding sentence.”
