The Northern Cape Provincial SAPS Task Team achieved “significant successes” during Operation Shanela actions in the ZF Mgcawu District.
THE NORTHERN Cape Provincial SAPS Task Team, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Colin Qunta, in collaboration with local police in Upington and surrounding areas, achieved “significant successes” during Operation Shanela on August 24.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the operation, conducted in the ZF Mgcawu District, led to the arrest of two suspects wanted for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). The task team also carried out search and seizure operations in the Paballelo area, searching five houses and arresting nine suspects for drug dealing and possession of suspected stolen goods. Several of the suspects are undocumented foreign nationals.
During these operations, the police confiscated 90 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R9,000 and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be drug proceeds. The suspected stolen goods were also seized for further investigation.
Additionally, the team responded to a domestic violence complaint, where a former police official was found in possession of unlicensed ammunition worth R11,230. The individual now faces charges of domestic violence and possession of unlicensed live ammunition.
In total, 13 suspects were arrested during the operation.
Sergeant Masegela emphasised that the Northern Cape police will relentlessly continue their efforts to “minimise the space for criminals to operate”.
