Swimming NC police dog nabs murder suspect in river

The 31-year-old suspect allegedly stabbed and killed his girlfriend’s father.

A K9 dog’s swimming skills proved more than useful when he apprehended a suspected murderer in the Harts River near Pampierstad in the Northern Cape .

The Hartswater police had launched a manhunt for the 31-year-old who allegedly stabbed and killed his girlfriend’s father on Tuesday.

The incident happened at about 3.30pm at their home in Donkerhoek, Hartswater, and the motive is under investigation.

The suspect fled the scene and was traced at about 1.50pm on Thursday in Pampierstad and allegedly attempted to flee by swimming across the river.

But Constable Ashley Kock sent Sem, the dog, into the river and the suspect was recovered half-way across and ultimately arrested by the Hartswater K9 unit.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Hartswater Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Frances Baard district commissioner, Major-General Johan Bean, applauded the Hartswater K9 unit and Sem the patrol dog for their speedy response that led to the arrest of the suspect.

He also commended the community for their assistance in the matter.
