A SUSPECTED copper cable thief was “caught red-handed” by the Colesberg highway patrol while attempting to sell 8.44 kilograms of cable with an estimated value of R50,000.

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said the suspect, who is a Lesotho national, approached the owner of a local workshop in Colesberg in an attempt to sell the stolen copper cables.

“The suspect was caught red-handed inside the workshop in possession of a red backpack stuffed with copper cables, waiting for the transaction to be finalised,” said Tawana.

“The members immediately apprehended the suspect when he was unable to provide substantive evidence for being in possession of the cables.”

Tawana stated that the suspect was expected to appear in the Colesberg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on a charge of contravening the Criminal Matters Amendment Act.

The acting commander of the Pixley ka Seme district, Brigadier Nomana Adonis, thanked the owner of the workshop for reporting criminal activities to the authority.
