Members from the Kimberley Search and Rescue unit were still on the scene, searching for the missing man.
THE KIMBERLEY police were on the scene at the Riverton Pleasure Resort yesterday after a search was launched for a man who is believed to have drowned in an apparent suicide.
According to the police, they received a report of a possible drowning at Riverton, outside Kimberley, at around 1pm yesterday.
“The police in Kimberley are investigating the drowning of a male person at Riverton on Tuesday (yesterday). Employees at the resort informed the police that they noticed a male person entering the resort at approximately 8am on Tuesday morning and that he was sitting in his vehicle. Later they noticed that the vehicle was unoccupied, with items of clothing and a cellphone lying inside, while there was no sign of the driver. They went searching for him but could not find him and informed the police,” police spokesperson Colonel Mashay Gamieldien said.
Late yesterday afternoon, Gamieldien indicated that members from the Kimberley Search and Rescue unit were still on the scene, searching for the missing man.
Sol Plaatje Municipality spokesperson Sello Matsie was also on the scene yesterday and he said that while the details of the man’s disappearance were still sketchy, employees at the resort had informed him that the man had “appeared to be suicidal”.
