THE POLICE officer from Ritchie who was stabbed in the head is still in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Mediclinic Gariep hospital in Kimberley.

The SAPS member was conducting patrols in Rietvale on Tuesday, as part of enforcing the 21-day lockdown restrictions, at the time of the incident.

The 33-year-old suspect, who was walking down the street, allegedly stabbed the police officer when he was approached by law enforcement agents.

The suspect was apparently shot in the arm by another police officer during the incident.

Two cases of attempted murder were opened at the Modderrivier police station, one relating to the stabbing incident while the other case was opened by the suspect following the shooting.

The police said the suspect was treated for a “minor wound” in hospital and is expected to appear in court soon on a charge of attempted murder.

Family members of the police officer were reluctant to speak to the media, saying only that he is still in a critical condition and they would be visiting him this afternoon.
