St Patrick’s executive head Craig Neave added that Anika Tiedt was placed in the top one percent of candidates in South Africa for her marks in Afrikaans First Additional Language.

“We are tremendously proud of each of you,” Neave said of the Class of 2022.

He stated that the overall results continued to improve each year due to the improved focus on the academic programme from the junior school right through to Grade 12.

“Our pupils and teachers are embracing modern teaching and learning techniques to ensure outstanding results. Our university pass rate of 92.5 percent is way above the national average. These results confirm our academic status of being the top performing school in the Northern Cape,” said Neave.

He congratulated all Grade 12 pupils and thanked teachers and support staff for their dedication and commitment.

“Our educators ensure the best possible educational experience for our children. We also appreciate the confidence and faith shown in us by our parents and the school community. As the executive head and management team, we pledge to continue striving for the best educational experience for our pupils in an ever-changing world.”

The CEO of the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), Anne Oberholzer, indicated that the overall 2022 National Senior Certificate pass rate was 98.42 percent.

“It is slightly higher than last year’s pass rate of 98.39 percent. The performance of the 2022 cohort of pupils has been outstanding.”

She pointed out that the 2022 cohort of pupils were the hardest hit by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Various strategies were employed to try and mitigate these factors including online teaching, distance education, catch-up programmes and weekend school lessons.

“While the Class of 2022 has seen how previous Grade 12 classes of 2020 and 2021 managed to adapt to a new reality, this was the class that missed out the most in their Grade 10 and Grade 11 years that are fundamentally important to success in their Grade 12 performance. They have had to work hard to maintain their drive and perseverance to succeed and in many respects, dig deep to play catch up in terms of lost time and experiences.”

She added that the national lockdown had affected pupils socially and emotionally.

“The absence of normal social interaction with friends and engagement in the social activities of teenagers should not be under-estimated. The dedication of the teaching community to implement various strategies to support their classes during this black swan event is exemplary. The IEB congratulates the candidates, their teachers and parents for a job extraordinarily well done,” Oberholzer said.
