CERTIFICATES and medals were awarded to 23 Grade 12 pupils from top-performing high schools in the Northern Cape during a Talent Pipeline Programme (TPP) farewell and closing ceremony at Sol Plaatje University (SPU) in Kimberley.

SPU spokesperson Kashini Maistry said pupils from Danielskuil High School, Umso High School in Colesberg, De Aar and Monwabisi high schools in De Aar, and Hoërskool Diamantveld, Kimberley Boys’ High School, Tetlanyo Secondary School, Boresetse High School and Vuyolwethu High School in Kimberley participated in a school holiday programme that covered refresher courses on the school curriculum as well as psycho-social educational enrichment programmes to prepare them for tertiary studies.

“The pupils from the 2021 TPP intake who are now in Grade 12 will soon sit for their national senior certificate examinations,” said Maistry.

She added that dignitaries who attended the ceremony on July 8 included the chairperson of the SPU Council, Judge Violet Phatshoane, the senior manager of social impact at De Beers Group, Josephine Pieters, the anchor funder of the programme and head of the Department of Education, Moira Marais-Martin, and a representative from the Northern Cape Office of the Premier, Mafu Davids.

SPU vice-chancellor and principal Professor Andrew Crouch stated that the programme aimed to assist high school pupils to transition to tertiary institutions.

“The TPP helps to close these gaps while the knowledge and skills acquired must be shared with other pupils.”
