IN A DRAMATIC high-speed chase through Bergsig, Springbok, this week, the police intercepted and seized over R700,000 worth of narcotics, disrupting a significant drug operation.
The bust, which resulted in the arrest of two suspects, aged 34 and 39, underscores the financial scale of the drug trade operating in the region – and the dangers it poses to communities.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam, officers conducting routine crime prevention patrols on January 29 noticed a suspicious purple vehicle. The driver attempted to evade the police, sparking a chase that ended with the vehicle being cornered in one of Bergsig’s streets.
During the pursuit, the police observed one of the suspects tossing a brown paper bag into a nearby yard – a move that only raised further suspicion. Upon closer inspection, officers found mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R90,600 and tik valued at a staggering R615,000, along with a substantial amount of cash believed to be the proceeds of criminal activity.
The suspects were arrested for drug dealing and are expected to appear in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court soon.
The vehicle used in the commission of the alleged crime was also seized.
Brigadier Schalk Andrews, the Namakwa district commissioner, praised the Springbok POP Delta platoon for their vigilance and swift action, emphasising that drug dealers will be brought to book.
