SOL PLAATJE Municipality is hard at work replacing the mini sub-station that exploded in Aviva Road on Wednesday morning leaving three municipal employees injured.

One of the employees is reportedly in a critical condition.

The mini sub-station, which is located in Hillcrest, exploded while employees were working to repair a circuit breaker and it was soon engulfed in flames.

The sub-station and its cables were totally destroyed in the blaze.

Municipal spokesperson Thoko Riet said the sub-station was in the process of being replaced and that new cables will have to be installed in order to restore electricity to the area.

“Once the mini sub-station is replaced, the electricians will install cables. This might take a while to complete,” Riet said. “We therefore request patience from the residents while we attend to the repairs. The suburb that is affected is Hillcrest and surroundings.

The three municipal employees – the acting electrical foreman and two electrical students – sustained injuries when they were busy replacing a circuit breaker and the mini sub-station suddenly exploded.

The acting electrical foreman apparently suffered serious burn injuries and had to be rushed to Bloemfontein for medical care.
