A WORKER from the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s sanitation department was involved in a “freak accident” on the weekend, when a high-pressure hose pierced and went straight through his leg.

According to municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie, the incident occurred on Friday evening after a team from the municipality’s sanitation department was called to Riverton to unblock a drain.

“The team was busy using the hose of a high-pressure truck to open a drain. The hose was inside the drain when it suddenly pulled out and started ‘snaking’ uncontrollably. The sheer pressure in the hose caused it to go straight through the upper leg of one of the workers on the scene, entering on one side and exiting on the other,” Matsie said yesterday.

He added that the hose was “not your normal garden hose” but a highly pressurised water hose.

Matsie said that the hose was cut off on both sides of the worker’s leg and that he suffered “tremendous blood loss” before being admitted to a hospital in Kimberley, where the piece of hose was removed during an operation.

Matsie said that the man was currently in a stable condition following the accident, adding that an investigation regarding safety issues would be launched by the municipality.
