Sol worker collapses, dies after hearing colleague tested Covid-19 positive

A Sol Plaatje Municipal worker collapsed and died on Wednesday shortly after hearing that a colleague had tested positive for Covid-19.

Municipal spokesperson, Thoko Riet, confirmed that the worker, who is employed in the Parks and Garden section, was confirmed dead by paramedics after collapsing in Queens Park.

Riet said that the workers had received confirmation at around 12.15pm on Wednesday that a colleague, who had been at work the previous day, had tested positive for Covid-19.

“Shortly after hearing the news, one of the workers collapsed. An ambulance was summoned and he was declared dead on the scene.”

The employee was 49 years old and had shown no previous symptoms of being unwell.

She added that the municipality had arranged psychological counselling for all employees who witnessed the incident.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the deceased.”

She stated that the co-worker, who had tested positive for Covid-19, was shocked and sad to hear of his colleague’s death.
