THE SOL Plaatje Municipality has encouraged residents to approach the rightful parties when requesting land for housing.

The spokesperson for the municipality, Thoko Riet, said on Tuesday that illegal land occupation posed a huge challenge to the city, adding that the trend was growing every day.

Riet pointed out that the municipality had regulations and measures in place for residents who were in need of land.

She advised residents to follow the correct procedures in order to procure land.

“The issue of land grabbers is a huge challenge for the municipality. It is also against the Covid-19 regulations to erect shacks on vacant land during the lockdown. Community members must engage with the municipality when seeking assistance with housing. Communities members should not resort to invading land illegally,” said Riet.

She stated that those who were in need were currently being assisted by the municipality.

“Alternative land is available at Lethabo Park, where over 200 shacks are already erected. We are in the process of moving more shacks to the available site. We urge the public to work with the municipality and to make the necessary requests so the municipality can see how best to assist residents with regards to housing,” Riet said.
