THE SOL Plaatje Municipality yesterday unveiled a state-of-the-art firefighting truck, a nearly R10 million investment, in a move that promises to bring much-needed relief to the Kimberley Fire Department and the city at large.

The city, which has been heavily reliant on a single dependable fire truck, now boasts a major pumper that is set to revolutionise emergency services.

Sol Plaatje executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni said the truck will ensure that speedier emergency services are rendered to city residents in the city.

“The addition of the major pumper to our firefighting fleet marks a significant investment in our emergency services and disaster management responsiveness. I am equally thrilled that it will immediately get to serve our communities.

“We have been on a wing and a prayer in that we only had one dependable truck. Through this acquisition, it is crystal clear that we have put back the sparkle into community safety as a pillar of service delivery,” said Sonyoni.

He added that the new fire truck is equipped with cutting-edge technology and features designed to make the work of firefighters easier.

“This truck is worth R9,080,749.61. It is fitted with a built-in foam system that is used for flammable liquids firefighting operations – fires from oil, petrol and other fuel spillages. It further features the latest technology such as the dash-mounted radio that is GPS, Bluetooth and WAP ready.

It also has a vehicle camera system with a 360-degree view that is able to operate in the dark and over-exposed lighting conditions, and includes a microphone for addressing the public.

“The team has ensured that key advances in terms of specification must be incorporated to ensure that this fire engine is exceptionally different from the current fleet and compares to the latest acquired elsewhere.

“A string of auxiliary equipment has had to be mounted in ensuring this fire engine meets regulatory requirements and is fit for purpose. The industry’s very best were relied upon in equipping it.

“We note that it will be equipped with all the necessary rescue equipment for motor crashes when extricating the injured. Other equipment includes a generator and various cutters.”

Sonyoni added that the truck is not just a tool, but also a symbol of gratitude from the municipality for the daily sacrifices made by firefighters.

“The acquisition of this fire engine should serve as a telling reminder to the firefighters who risk their lives to save others. Let this truck be an acknowledgement of the immeasurable contribution these firefighting women and men make to community safety.”
