THE SOL Plaatje Municipality has issued a warning about fraudsters posing as municipal officials and soliciting cash payments from ratepayers.

According to municipal spokesperson Thabo Mothibi, the scammers are threatening to disconnect residents if they fail to make payments via mobile apps such as CashSend, eWallet, Instant Money, and others.

“To avoid falling victim to this scam, remember that no official from the Sol Plaatje Municipality is authorised to solicit cash payments or instruct that payments be made via mobile apps to an individual,” said Mothibi. “Officials are not authorised to accept payments outside the designated pay points or receive payments into unauthorised bank accounts.”

Mothibi emphasised that legitimate payment options include paying at designated pay points, depositing funds directly into the municipality’s official bank account, or using the Easypay online portal at www.solplaatje.online.

“If you are unsure about any payment requests, verify the information by calling the municipality’s call centre at 080 122 9010,” he added.
