SOL PLAATJE executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni was elected as the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) chairperson in the Frances Baard region during the regional conference that was held on Saturday at Boontjieskraal.
Addressing the conference on Saturday, ANC regional chairperson Mangaliso Matika advised the ANCYL to guard against those who wished to sow division in the movement and create instability within its structures.
“The movement is in dire need of committed and hard-working members and a leadership that understands the people they lead. The movement needs special cadres who understand and live for the ideas and values of the ANC.
“These special cadres should serve the organisation selflessly without any expectation of material benefit. They must keep in mind that while it is their right to be members of the ANC, it is a rare privilege to lead the ANC.
“The cancer present in our leadership structures is that everybody seems to want to lead by hook or crook.”
Matika noted that there was a decline in ANC support in the Northern Cape during the 2021 local government elections, where support was “eroded by enemies who never ceased to plot their undoing”.
“As we move towards the 2024 elections, the ANCYL must remain the vanguard of championing the course of young people, whilst defending the gains of our democracy.”
He added that the ANCYL had a responsibility to gain the trust of communities on the ground.
