In a separate memorandum, all directors were also informed that the purchasing of diaries, as well as bottled water, is “terminated with immediate effect”

FIRST it was announced that Sol 1 NC would be put up for sale. Now other “unnecessary items” including beverages and refreshments, as well as bottled water, will also be cut for Sol Plaatje Municipality staff.

A memorandum was sent to all municipal staff yesterday by the acting chief financial officer, Zahid Cader, that the purchasing of beverage items (coffee, tea, milk and sugar), as well as confectionery items (biscuits, cakes) and refreshment drinks, will be terminated with immediate effect.

Cader granted permission for the procurement of these items “within reasonable limits” only to the offices of the Mayor and Speaker “due to their operational nature”.

The memorandum is signed by Cader, as well as the acting municipal manager, Thami Mabija, and dated yesterday’s date.

In a separate memorandum, all directors were also informed that the purchasing of diaries, as well as bottled water, is “terminated with immediate effect”.

Last week, the executive mayor announced that the official mayoral vehicle, an Audi Q7, “Sol 1 NC” will be sold.

In a statement, issued by his office, it was pointed out that the decision to sell the vehicle was made “in response to the current challenges faced by the municipality as part of its cost-containment measures”.

“The current mood is to forego some of the material benefits and cut out the frills. We are selling the vehicle to dispose of a liability. We are serious about service delivery and the executive mayor is leading by example to forego some of the benefits that come with serving in the office.”
