Sol, company in row over festival money

Diamonds and Dorings Festival.

IN THE bid evaluation of the now-shelved Diamonds and Dorings Music Festival, one of the reasons for rejecting service provider Macronym 37 CC to host the event was that it apparently owes Sol Plaatje Municipality an amount of R250 600.

The company was one of five service providers that submitted bids for the event, including InvesTong Events that was selected as the successful bidder.

Incidentally, InvesTong had the highest budget of R16 million while the municipality had allocated a budget of only R2 million for the event.

MKV Investments JV Mega Works Trading Enterprise 200 (Pty) Ltd, trading as Showtime Entertainment, Wydex Events Promotions and Seasons Find 1315cc JV Zikmo Productions were the other competing service providers.

Macronym 37 CC ,in its proposal, offered to run the event this year “without Sol Plaatje Municipality having to pay a cent”.

It advised that it would sponsor the event with an amount of R1.5 million, along with other sponsorships. No names of potential sponsors were, however, submitted.

The programme outline included a gala dinner, comedy show, gospel show, street craft and cultural festival and sporting events.

According to the bid evaluation committee, Macronym had “never brought any other sponsors on board” over the past three years that they hosted the event.

The committee stated that Macronym still owed Sol Plaatje Municipality an amount of R250 600 for hosting the festival in 2018.

It was also stated that the financial audit of 2018 carried an incorrect reflection and was not signed by the service provider, where the Frances Baard District Municipality sponsored R300 000 although only an amount of R175 000 was written in the financial report as the sponsored amount.

The sponsorship of the Northern Cape Tourism Authority, to the amount of R50 000, was also not reflected on the financial report.

Sol Plaatje Municipality did not indicate whether any steps, legal or otherwise, would be taken to recover the money owed to it by Macronym nor whether any investigation would be conducted to trace the missing sponsorship money for the 2018 Diamonds and Dorings event.

Sol Plaatje municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie, said yesterday that the municipality could not disclose any details regarding money owed by its debtors. “It is a contravention of client privilege.”

The director of Macronym 37 CC, Somandla Sibisi, disputed the amount owed to the municipality.

He said that he only had an outstanding amount of R150 000 in the form of ticket sales.

“The tickets were stolen and cloned and I will have to carry the costs thereof. It is something beyond my control.”

Sibisi added that the lifestyle and music festival, which he will host in his private capacity, will be going ahead as planned over the Easter weekend. “The performance line-up will be announced shortly.”

This is while a Passover conference will also be taking place at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre at the same time – from April 19 to 21.

The Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre indicated that the Passover conference would be held inside the conference centre while the music and lifestyle festival would take place outdoors.

It assured member of the public that there should be sufficient parking as the Passover conference would finish ahead of the music festival.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture yesterday indicated that it had not received any formal correspondence or application to fund the festival to be held at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre over the Easter weekend.

Spokesperson for the department, Conrad Fortune, explained that all requests for financial assistance for the promotion of social cohesion and nation building events were forwarded to the Northern Cape Arts and Culture Council for deliberation and discussion.

“A decision is based on the availability of funds and whether the festival is in line with expected outcomes and the mandate of the department.”

Meanwhile, Wydex Events Promotions will hold a comedy show featuring Loyiso, Tjhwala, Khoisan Comedian X!!, Twins on Decks, Fistaz Mixwell, Khanyisa Bunu, Chris Mapane and Ntosh Madlingozi on April 19 at the Kimberley Theatre.
