SOL PLAATJE Municipality cleared a blocked stormwater drain near Revelation Road of rubble and debris after residents’ homes were flooded during heavy rains last week.

Municipal spokesperson Thoko Riet said the public needed to be educated about the dangers of illegal dumping in stormwater channels.

“It affects flow rate and results in flooding of houses adjacent to the channel. Convection Street, Revelation Road and Absolom Crescent flooded because of this problem,” said Riet.

She added that cleaning the channels was “not an easy task”.

Residents complained that their furniture was damaged during the flooding, where they would have to carry the costs.

“Nothing was done to eliminate the problem. We will be sitting with the same problem as soon as there are more heavy rains,” the residents said.

They pointed out that the last time the drain was cleared was in 2021.

“Perhaps it would help if the channel is cleared on a regular basis.”
