TWENTY children embarked on a life-changing journey this week thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Smile Foundation, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital (RMSH), and Airports Company South Africa (Acsa).
This year’s Kimberley Smile Week, taking place from December 2 to 6, is more than just a series of surgeries. It’s a beacon of hope for children and their families who have faced unimaginable challenges.
Most of these young patients will receive cleft lip and palate repair surgeries, while two children will undergo reconstructive burn treatments.
For each child, this week marks a turning point – a chance to reclaim their confidence, connect with peers, and embrace a future filled with possibilities.
Among these young heroes is seven-year-old Gomolemo from Kuruman. After surviving a devastating shack fire two years ago, Gomolemo has endured months of intensive medical care at RMSH. Her journey, marked by resilience and courage, epitomises the spirit of Smile Week.
Supported by the Smile Foundation and Acsa, Gomolemo and her family will receive transport assistance, easing the financial burden as they take another step toward healing.
Acsa, a long-time supporter of the Smile Foundation, is deeply committed to this mission. “A child living with disfigurement faces not only physical challenges but also emotional struggles. We are honoured to play a role in helping these children express themselves fully and engage with their surroundings without limitations,” shared an Acsa spokesperson.
Tarri Parfitt, CEO of Smile Foundation, highlighted the profound impact of these efforts: “Every passing moment is a chance for transformation, but for children with facial anomalies and burn injuries, these can feel far out of reach. The generosity of sponsors like Acsa, combined with the dedication of medical teams and hospital staff, gives these children a chance at happier, more confident lives.”
The surgeries provided during Smile Week extend far beyond correcting physical anomalies. They address the deeper scars of social isolation, bullying, and diminished self-worth. By offering these life-altering procedures free of charge to families in need, the Smile Foundation restores not only smiles but also a sense of dignity and belonging.
For the children and their families, Kimberley Smile Week is a reminder that hope shines brightest in the darkest times. It’s about the transformative power of compassion, skill, and community, proving that every child deserves to face the world with a confident smile.
Through their continued partnership, the Smile Foundation and Acsa are ensuring that smiles – and lives – are rebuilt, one child at a time.
