SIX SUSPECTS who were allegedly involved in an armed robbery in Augrabies were arrested on Monday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said an armed man entered a shop in Augrabies on October 31 and robbed the cashier of an undisclosed sum of cash and cigarettes.

“He was armed with a firearm. A patrolling police vehicle spotted the robber as he jumped into a Toyota SUV with five other male occupants inside and sped off,” said Kock.

“The robbers started shooting at the police vehicle when they chased after them. The suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot into the veld close to the N14 in the direction of Pofadder.”

Kock said the Highway Patrol, Springbok and Upington K9 as well as Upington POPS and local police members were activated for assistance.

“Local farmers also assisted SAPS with a drone and a light aircraft.”

He added that all six male suspects were arrested at different locations in the area. “Three firearms and ammunition were seized during the apprehension of the suspects. No injuries or fatalities were reported.”

Kock stated that the suspects, who are between the ages of 22 and 30, were arrested and charged with attempted murder, business robbery and the possession of unlicensed firearms.

“The vehicle was also seized as it was used in the commission of a crime. The suspects will appear in court soon.”

Kock indicated that four of the suspects were foreign nationals, while the other two were South African citizens.

The provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, commended the SAPS and the Onseepkans community for their assistance in apprehending and arresting the suspects and warned criminals that police visibility would be intensified ahead of the festive season.
