THE KIMBERLEY Action Group (KAG) has confirmed that the city-wide shutdown planned for Monday, October 28, has been “put on ice”, pending ongoing engagements.

Boyce Makodi from the KAG welcomed several new developments but noted that further protest action was not completely “off the cards”.

“It will only be called off if all the remaining issues are resolved,” he warned.

“The municipality committed to formally withdraw the basic and electricity capacity charges at a special council meeting that will be held on Wednesday, October 30. We will still be tackling the unaffordable electricity prices.”

He added that the taxi industry would meet with authorities next week in an attempt to resolve their grievances.

Makodi stated that a mass meeting would be held at the Galeshewe circle on Sunday, at 3pm, to provide feedback on the ongoing discussions with the provincial government and the municipality.

In a joint statement, it was confirmed that a successful stakeholder engagement, led by MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs Bentley Vass, MEC for Education Abraham Vosloo, Sol Plaatje Municipality executive mayor Kagisho Sonyoni, Speaker Nomazizi Shwababa, ANC chief whip Martin White, and provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, was held with the KAG and Santaco and its affiliates on Friday.

“The KAG acknowledges the importance of education and the impact that the shutdown might have had on matric examinations and the hosting of the Miss Teen Universe pageant in Kimberley. The KAG appreciates the series of engagements that have yielded some positive outcomes and laid the path for further engagements. Also, Santaco and its affiliates will pursue their concerns with provincial government and the local municipality,” the statement read.

The provincial government extended its appreciation that the shutdown had been called off for further engagements and wished matric pupils who are writing their final exams well.
