Second suspect arrested for alleged human trafficking

The Hawks rescued three victims from an apartment “that is reported to be used as a brothel”

A 29-YEAR-old suspect was arrested for allegedly luring victims from Upington to Sandton where they were used for prostitution.

Hawks Northern Cape provincial spokesperson Nomthandazo Mnisi said the arrest was made by a multi-disciplinary team comprising of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Northern Cape and Gauteng, Crime Intelligence Northern Cape, the Local Criminal Record Centre Gauteng and Douglasdale SAPS during an intelligence-driven ongoing investigation into alleged trafficking in persons.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday in Sandton in Gauteng. It is alleged that victims were lured from Upington in the Northern Cape to Sandton and were used for prostitution.

A search was conducted of an apartment in Sandton that is reported to be used as a brothel. During the search, three victims aged between 19 and 24 were rescued. Cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money were seized.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Upington Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he will join his co-accused Emmanuel Uzoaga, 33.
