A SECOND accused, Maria Zakhura, 42, appeared in the Port Nolloth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for dealing in unpolished diamonds.

Her co-accused, Paulo Sergio Martin, was arrested on March 14 by the police on the same charge.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said on Wednesday that Zakhura was arrested by the Upington and Springbok-based units of the Hawk’s Serious Organised Corruption Investigation unit after a warrant of arrest was issued for dealing in unpolished diamonds.

“The arrest emanates from a project-driven investigation which is currently under way,” said Thebe.

He added that Zakhura was granted bail of R30,000, with bail conditions.

“The next court appearance will be on June 13. Investigation into the matter continues.”
