VEDANTA Zinc International is continuing with its rescue and recovery mission for the miner who has been trapped underground following a rockfall incident at its Gamsberg South Pit site on Tuesday, November 17.

Ten miners were initially trapped but eight were rescued, while one died.

Mine management said on Tuesday they will continue tirelessly in their efforts to recover their remaining trapped colleague.

“The mining team completed their training programmes and continued the construction of the waste ramp required for access to the failed mass, as well as the continued operations to make waste material available from other areas. During the week, construction of the ramp will be the main priority, to ensure the targeted location is reached in the shortest time frame,” they said.

They added that the deceased miner was buried on Saturday.

“The funeral for the deceased, Melvin Rodney Saal, was held in Concordia on December 5, 2020. The funeral was attended by his family, local communities, and colleagues from Vedanta Zinc International and Moolmans (Pty) Ltd.”
