NORTHERN Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul pledged R5 million towards the local economic development (LED) unit at Umsobomvu Municipality during the provincial Women’s Day celebrations that were held at the Lowryville community hall in Colesberg on Tuesday.

During his address, Saul highlighted the importance of fighting for the economic emancipation of women.

He stated that the fund was aimed at helping women grow their businesses and enabling them to contribute to the local economy by becoming employers.

A cheque for R100,000 was also handed over to the youngest member of the Banyana Banyana team that recently clinched the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown in Morocco, Nthabiseng Majiya, who represents Richmond United Ladies FC in De Aar.

Thirty beneficiaries from youth-based entrepreneurs and women-based sporting organisations in the Northern Cape received R10,000 each to develop their businesses.

Sporting equipment was handed over to local sports teams to further hone their skills in their respective sporting codes, while R100,000 and R150,000 was donated to the Colesberg Primary School choir and the Umso High School choir respectively.

Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture spokesperson Morapedi Sekhoane said a number of programmes to empower women would be held during the month of August, including self-defence training, a netball tournament, storytelling and a women’s dialogue.

“The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will launch Netball Fridays as part of its build-up activities towards the 2023 Netball World Cup competition. The Office on the Status of Women in the Office of the Premier will conduct a gender-based violence summit with the intention to craft a provincial plan relating to GBV and femicide,” added Sekhoane.
