A SOUTH African Police Service (SAPS) constable, charged with rape, kidnapping, and assault of a 23-year-old woman, is expected to apply for bail in the Upington District Court on Tuesday.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane confirmed on Monday that the accused, 27-year-old Luthando Meintjies, had appeared in court to face multiple charges.
“He is facing three counts of rape, three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and one count of kidnapping,” said Senokoatsane.
He added that the alleged incident occurred on November 15 at Meintjies’ residence.
According to the NPA, Meintjies had been consuming alcohol that evening.
“It is believed that during the night, the accused told the complainant to call her mother as he wanted money to buy more beer. The accused allegedly proceeded to assault and rape her several times when she was unable to source the funds,” Senokoatsane explained.
He said the victim reportedly tried to escape by hiding in the bathroom, but Meintjies allegedly broke down the door. During the ordeal, the woman managed to text her uncle for help.
“The uncle arrived at the accused’s home with the police and the accused was arrested and charged with rape, assault GBH, and kidnapping,” Senokoatsane added.
The State has indicated its intention to oppose bail. The case has been postponed to December 10 for further bail proceedings.
