SA COVID-19 DEATH TOLL HITS 65

CAPE TOWN – South Africa now has 65 Covid-19 related deaths and 3 635 infections, health minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Wednesday evening.

The total number of tests conducted to date is 133 774, of which 6 868 were done in the last 24 hours.

The provincial breakdown is as follows:

GAUTENG – 1 224

WESTERN CAPE – 1 079

KWAZULU-NATAL – 758

EASTERN CAPE – 377

FREE STATE – 106

LIMPOPO – 27

NORTH WEST – 24

MPUMALANGA – 23

NORTHERN CAPE – 16

NOTE:

 Wednesday afternoon the number of positive Covid-19 cases in the Northern Cape still remained at 16. The provincial Department of Health indicated that it will issue a statement on Thursday to clarify all Covid-19 related matters. This follows previous reports stating that the Province had recorded two new cases, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 18. However, department spokesperson Lebogang Majaha explained on Wednesday that the two additional cases were repeat tests that were conducted on known positive cases.

“We regrettably report seven more COVID-19 related deaths. Five of them occurred in the Western Cape and two in KwaZulu-Natal. This increases the total to 65. We express our condolences to the affected families and appreciate the health workers who treated these patients,” said Mkhize.
