Minister corrects death toll

MINISTER Minister in the presidency, Jackson Mthembu, on Friday said South Africa’s coronavirus (Covid-19) infection figures are now at 1 170.

Mthembu told journalists in Pretoria that he was making the announcement on behalf of health minister Zweli Mkhize, who was not at the briefing.

Mthembu said, as a correction, that one person has been confirmed dead as a result of Covid-19 while the other one is suspected to have died of ailments linked to the disease.

Several ministers including transport minister Fikilie Mbalula, justice minister Ronald Lamola, police minister Bheki Cele and defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula were at the briefing.

The ministers were clarifying issues on South Africa’s first day of the 21-day national lockdown, which began on Friday.
