The police have confirmed that a case was opened on Sunday against Engelbrecht with regard to Saturday’s altercation

WHILE a local businessman has been charged with attempted murder following an altercation with a member of the SAPS at Tafel Lager Park on the weekend, it has come to light that police are also investigating a case of common assault pertaining to the incident.

The apparent altercation took place in one of the stadium’s hospitality suites following Griquas’ Currie Cup loss to the Blue Bulls last Saturday.

On Monday afternoon this week, Marcelle van Vuuren, 32, made a brief appearance in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court, where he was released on bail of R1 000, following an incident that left Marc Engelbrecht, an off-duty member of the SAPS Airwing, in Mediclinic Gariep’s high care unit.

Van Vuuren, a regional manager for Bidvest Waltons, is due to return to court next month after handing himself over to police on Sunday.

However, the police have confirmed that a case was opened on Sunday against Engelbrecht with regard to Saturday’s altercation.

“Police are investigating a case of common assault,” said SAPS provincial spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock, when asked if there were charges against the 35-year-old policeman.

“The case was opened on Sunday and the investigation continues.”
